The cranberry’s important role in support and prevention for the urinary tract and bladder health is well known. However, the cranberry can also benefit men with prostate problems, through the power of the cranberry’s polyphenols.
The prostate has important functions, such as producing a secretion that improves the mobility of sperm cells. However, over time, the prostate enlarges. This is usually benign.
Once the prostate has reached a specific size, it can cause an increased urge to urinate, a weak stream of urine, and the feeling that the bladder cannot be emptied completely. This can be especially acute at night.
The prostate – an issue for men over 50
More than a third of all men over 50 years of age are confronted with the unpleasant side effects of an enlarged prostate. Some also have chronic prostatitis.
Czech researchers recently took a closer look at the active ingredients of cranberries and their effects on men’s health. The test subjects were older men with symptoms such as urinary tract problems, prostate inflammation and elevated Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels.
In the study, after just 6 months, increased cranberry consumption improved quality of life, PSA levels, and urine flow.
What is the PSA value?
The PSA levels indicate whether a prostate disease is present. The higher the values, the higher the risk of disease. In the Czech study, the participating men received cranberries for six months.
The result after half a year: The prostate complaints and the quality of life had improved, the urge to urinate, urine flow and the amount of residual urine were significantly less disturbing. The PSA values had also improved.
Research: Cranberry and prostate cancer
In laboratory experiments with prostate cancer cells it has been shown that cranberry polyphenols in concentrated form (extracts) can destroy the genetic code of the cancer cell. This is done by activating certain enzymes that “kill” the prostate cancer cell.
This is a very promising finding for men, many of whom have not taken adequate precautions for prostate issues.
