A lifestyle with ample time in front of screens, around dry air, and wearing contact lenses makes the dry eye a constant issue for many of us. A study of 478 affected patients showed that taking omega-3 fatty acids could alleviate the symptoms of dry eye.
What is the origin of dry eyes?
A dry eye, also called sicca syndrome, is a visual impairment. It does not only affect contact lens wearers, screen work in too dry an environment, too little blinking, mobile phone use, excessive television consumption or too little production of tear fluid can also lead to a dry eye.
The complaints range from burning, red eyes, to foreign body sensation in the eye, to headaches and visual impairments. Since there is not only one cause for the development of a dry eyes, the treatment and relief is difficult.
Taking omega-3 fatty acids has relieved the symptoms of dry eyes.
How are dry eyes treated?
A variety of fat-based drops and ointments can relieve dry eye symptoms more or less well. We recommend a diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids, not smoking, and a balanced, healthy diet in general. Ghee, a butter-based substance from Ayurvedic medicine, is recommended in complementary medicine.
A study with 478 participants confirmed that the administration of omega-3 (EPA, DHA) could significantly alleviate the symptoms of dry eye. Measurements of the evaporation of the tear fluid film changed positively. After a three-month administration of the omega-3 preparations, it was shown that a clear improvement of the symptoms could be achieved.
The stabilization of the tear fluid was measurable and the symptoms subjectively improved. An additional intake of EPA and DHA could therefore be an effective alternative for the treatment of dry eyes. Further information on the subject of omega-3 fatty acids can be found here.
