Not a day goes by without harmful substances from the outside affecting our body, be it through the intake of food and water, the air, clothing or cosmetics, etc. Chlorella algae can make a valuable contribution to binding these toxins and eliminating them through the intestines.
Chlorella – an inconspicuous all-rounder
Chlorella, scientifically known as Chlorella vulgaris, is a microscopically small green algae that is found in freshwater throughout the world. Since it can easily be cultivated on a large scale, it is becoming increasingly important, especially in times when alternatives to traditional agriculture are being sought. It is a true all-rounder in its use as a food supplement, protein source, and feed or raw material for biofuels.
Chlorella contains up to 50% protein in addition to minerals such as magnesium, potassium and especially vitamin B12.
The Chlorella algae also has a unique nutrient profile. In addition to a high content of chlorophyll and minerals, it contains up to 50% protein, which could make it an interesting food of the future. Among the minerals, magnesium, potassium, calcium, iron, chromium and – as one of the few plant sources – vitamin B12 are particularly noteworthy.
Due to the high bioavailability of vitamin B12, the algae is perfect for vegans, vegetarians, and elderly people who can no longer absorb as much vitamin B12. Chlorella intake can reduce the usual symptoms of vitamin B12 deficiency such as dizziness, fatigue, loss of performance, and even nerve dysfunction, which can be seen as numbness. Chlorella also provides a balanced spectrum of amino acids, important nucleic acids and essential (unsaturated) fatty acids.
Detox with Chlorella?
But what role does Chlorella play in detoxification, often referred to as “detox”? The secret lies in the cell walls of the algae. These consist of cellulose and are surprisingly strong for their size. In these cell walls, chains of polymer hydrocarbons are found – to put it simply – molecular compounds that give the algae cells their resistance close to the outside.
These special polymers also give the Chlorella algae the ability to absorb toxic substances such as heavy metals into the cell wall and “hold on” to them and then be excreted together with them via the intestine. This prevents these toxins from being absorbed by the intestine and subsequently transported via the blood into the liver, where they put a strain on the liver.
Regular absorption of the micro-algae can have a positive effect on oxidative stress in the organism and generally improve the overall state of health. Furthermore, it was found that in some patients suffering from high blood pressure, the high blood pressure was lowered or stabilized by a regular intake of chlorella.
Why detoxify?
Pollutants, toxins, and chemicals are now part of our everyday lives, but we usually do not consciously perceive them. They are everywhere and you can hardly escape them. They enter our system involuntarily and automatically. We intake them through our water, meals, oxygen and even our skin. Personal exposure to toxins can be reduced somewhat, for example by using organic foods and natural cosmetics.
Chlorella’s absorption capacity helps to eliminate heavy metals from our body via the intestines.
Nevertheless, the absorption of a certain amount of harmful substances is difficult or unavoidable. This leads to the accumulation of pollutants such as heavy metals in human tissue, which leads to an increase in chronic diseases. The special properties of chlorella algae can promote the excretion of heavy metals, especially metals such as mercury, lead, cadmium, arsenic and nickel, through the intestines. In addition, the algae contains important nutrients and unsaturated fatty acids, which effectively compensate for the deficiencies caused by excretion.
Tips for detoxification
Chlorella can be taken in the form of capsules, powder or pressed powder in tablet form. For a detoxification cure it is unfortunately not done with one to two weeks, as many people mistakenly believe. In any case, one should plan several months for an effective detoxification.
Depending on the regularity of the intake and the dosage, the body needs at least 12 weeks until the removal of heavy metals and toxins from the body is possible. Therefore, a certain patience and the use of at least 2 g of algae per day is recommended. The microalgae then not only removes toxins from the body, but also inhibits typical detoxification symptoms such as fatigue and headaches.
Chlorella also stimulates the metabolism and can be a natural support for a more active lifestyle. However, you should not forget a balanced diet and exercise, which are the prerequisites for any change such as losing a few kilos or building muscles. Chlorella can also have a positive effect on the skin thanks to its detoxifying effect. The skin is the largest organ of detoxification in the body, which is directly related to the detoxifying effect of the algae.
Bowel cleansing
Chlorella can also be used for a bowel cleansing cure. Here, existing deposits and toxins in the intestine are dissolved and removed. The work of the intestine is supported and thus the excretion is facilitated. Taking Chlorella can create a more favourable environment for beneficial intestinal bacteria. This can prevent the formation of fungi, parasites or harmful intestinal bacteria and, subsequently, the development towards chronic inflammatory intestinal diseases.
